ChannelNEXT Central Puts the Focus on Future MSPs

Day 1 of the ChannelNext Central conference opened with a keynote that explored what the future MSP may look like now that the market has entered the age of agentic artificial intelligence.

Technoplanet publisher and host Julian Lee told the audience at the historic Old Mill that the managed services industry is undergoing its most profound transformation in four decades, driven by the rapid rise of AI, shifting customer expectations, and a channel ecosystem being re‑architected in real time.

“The channel is undergoing its most significant structural shift in 40 years,” Lee said, noting that the implications for MSPs are nothing short of seismic.

What’s driving this seismic shift?
At the top of the list is the emergence of agentic, autonomous AI solutions capable of performing tasks, making decisions, and augmenting human teams in ways that fundamentally reshape service delivery. MSPs are no longer simply optimizing workflows; they are preparing for a future where AI‑powered assistants operate alongside humans. This demands new governance models, clearer accountability structures, and a deeper understanding of which tasks agents can perform independently, which require human oversight, and how traceability and responsibility are maintained.

How will the market change for MSPs?
The forces accelerating this shift are unmistakable. MSP clients are becoming AI‑empowered at every layer, demanding more automation, more intelligence, and more proactive security. Cybersecurity remains the dominant growth engine, with global spending projected to reach a whopping $311.3 billion this year, and services outpacing products by nearly 2:1. Managed services alone are forecast to hit $106.3 billion, growing at 14.4 per cent annually, underscoring the central role MSPs play in securing an increasingly complex digital landscape.

What risks must MSPs overcome?
The challenges are equally stark. One in five MSPs is operating at a loss. Thirty per cent of revenue is consumed by operational tools. Skills shortages persist. Leadership gaps in AI readiness are widening. Competitive pressure from more AI‑mature MSPs to outright customer poaching is intensifying. Add aging ownership with limited succession planning and rising employee stress, and the need for reinvention becomes urgent.

What are the key takeaways?
The winners in this new era will be those who build layered, interoperable partner ecosystems, embrace token‑based consumption models, and embed AI into every workflow not as a bolt‑on, but as a core operating principle. Channel partnerships matter more than ever as MSPs navigate the pace of change and prepare their organizations for a hybrid workforce of humans and autonomous agents.

One of the clearest messages from ChannelNext Central: the future of MSPs isn’t approaching; in fact it’s already here. The only question now is who will adapt fast enough to lead it.
