Greetings from Apple Expo 2009
What happens when you bring together manufacturers showcasing hundreds of Apple products, hundreds of Mac business users and 30 Mac/iPhone seminars? You get the first ever AppleExpo in Canada.
Not just any location will do for the first AppleExpo. It had to be held at the historic Distillery District with its creative and cool environment. This latest hip-spot in Toronto downtown was the perfect setting for the event. The cobblestone
walkways between the conference theaters and the exposition made the experience that much more enjoyable. The weather was also sunny and not too hot. Visitors got to enjoy both the Apple expo and the many attractions that can only be found at the Distillery District. Well done!
“It is high-time Canada got its very own Apple Expo. It is a great way for the Canadian Mac users to meet the companies who make excellent products for Apple” Said Sean Costello President of Irongate, one of the largest Apple System Integrators.
Despite being launched during the year of the global economic recession, held on a Friday afternoon in the second to last weekend of August and the day after a tornado touched down in the GTA, it was a great success. The event organizer confirmed it will become an annual event and much bigger in 2010 as it reaches out to over 800,000 Canadian iPhone users.
“With over one million combined Mac and iPhone users already in Canada, we are ready for a Canadian AppleExpo
said Gerlinda Ringe, AppleExpo Event Organizer. “As it was our first event, we did have a few hiccups, but judging from the comments we got, we are on the right track. Our after-event survey showed over 93% will be back again next year and many suggested what more they want to see. We are absorbing all the feedback to improve for next year” adds Ringe.
The seminars touched on many hot topics for Mac business and iphone users. Apple did a sneak preview on the now released Snow Leopard operating system. Kerio demonstrated how their mail server helps businesses in mixed operating system environments with seamless integration with iPhones. Apple presented the business case for Windows users to consider switching to Macs – touting the price, performance,
reliability and security angles. They also showed how businesses are using iphones instead of Blackberries as their mobile device. Several presentations covered iPhone custom business application development and integration. It is an area that is already seeing massive growth.
Many seminars covered network storage solutions with remote management, open directory and active directory integration, data security, e-mail spam management, backup and disaster recovery. Many software workshops were held on Adobe applications, Apple Keynote, Filemaker, iPhoto, iMovie and more. There was something for just about anyone using Macs or iPhones in business.
The expo hall was in the Fermenting Cellar (A place where many of the top entertainment industry events are held). It’s industrial hip look made the traditional computer trade-show a cool experience.
